I stand beside the window in the night,
And through immeasurable distance afar
I gather in my eyes the trembling ray
Of one gentle and distant star.
This light began trillions of miles away,
Through black and icy barren expanse to here,
Unceasing through the darkness of space,
For who knows how many millennia?
A message of heaven has finally found me
and reached its goal inside my eyes.
Gladly it dies as over it I close,
The coffin-lid of my tired eyes.
This diptych is a direct visual translation of the emotional landscape found within the poetry of Árpád Tóth. Built upon two interconnected clay panels, the work captures a transition from heavy, rugged earth toward a wide, impressionistic expanse of quiet light.
The steep slopes on either side are heavily textured, embedded with sharp, dark fragments of slate that form a jagged path descending toward a common centre. These stones represent the weight, friction, and difficult pathways of a painful reality. Yet, as the eye moves past the rocky barriers, the composition opens up into a vast horizon. The upper clay body is worked with a dense, stippled texture that catches the light, layered with soft washes of sky blue, twilight pink, and a grounding baseline of meadow green.
The physical divide down the middle of the artwork mimics the structural break between past pain and future peace. It honours the exact literary magic of Árpád Tóth and his ability to stand amidst a harsh, rocky landscape, yet look upward to find a fairy-tale sky of soft, melancholic beauty. Fired and permanent, this relief stands as a tactile monument to the hiding places that save us, proving that even the most rugged paths can lead us to a space of quiet grace.
